When I begin to write, I have a tendency to start with the genre. Everybody is different, but for me this sets up the whole of the script.
Could you imagine a horror film with the main protagonist called Harvey Wallbanger? (I know it 's the name of a cocktail)
or:-
A romantic comedy, where the lead is The Terminator. (Extreme I know, but you get the gist).
A summary of different genres:-
Comedy, Romance, Western, Action, Sci-Fi, Childrens, Thriller, Adventure, Drama, Family, Fantasy, Film Noir, Documentary, Crime, Psychological, Biography.....the list goes on.
A combination of two or more genres have made for some good films:-
Rom/Com - There's something about Mary.
Action/Adventure - Indiana Jones franchise.
Western/Sci-Fi - Cowboys and Aliens... ahem, maybe not.
The genre is the foundation that can shape your ideas and backgrounds, build characters, form conflicts and dialogue.
Although, at the beginning of this post, I said that I usually (not always) decide on the genre as a starting point.
The truth is that you cannot just pick a genre at random and hope something comes to you, as you may just be waiting forever.
Until next time.
